Bad Toilet Odour

Problem:

Very offensive sewage smell coming from toilet or around where the toilet is situated.  Also possible odours outside near where the toilet feeds into the sewers.

Diagnosis:

This could be caused by a number of things and would really require the diagnosis of an expert plumber.  Some of the more common causes are perhaps a burst sewage pipe somewhere in the system, a damaged or ineffective wax ring around your toillet base or perhaps your toilet bowl may not be filling up with enough water.

It is particualarly important to be wary of a defective ring around the base of your toilet because this can result in the leaking of raw sewage all over your floor.  Not only is this unpleasant, it is also a significant health risk to all who inhabit your home.

Running Toilets

Problem:

Toilet runs continuously causing you to waste water.

This may not always happen continuously, it may only begin by running occasionally after flushing and then slowly build up into a worse problem.  Either way you are likely to waste lots of water and create quite a distracting sound coming from your bathroom that simply won’t go away.

Diagnosis:

This is more than likely caused by a defective flapper valve in your cistern and if you don’t replace it then the noise and the water wastage will never stop.  It’s a common enough problem with toilets and a relatively straightforward one to correct with the right parts and tools.
