Boiler not working

Problem:

The boiler isn’t working.

Diagnosis:

This is usually caused by one of three things, unless there is a more severe problem; an expert would help you diagnose.  Possible causes are:

  • Thermostat could be set too low to actually trigger the boiler to work.
  • The timer may not be working if you’ve planned for the boiler to work at a particular time.
  • The gas boiler’s pilot light could have gone out.  This is common in homes that have their gas supply on a meter.

Solution:

Call EPM to arrange a visit.

Cool patch in the centre of the radiator

Problem:

Sometimes you may get a cold patch in the centre of the radiator and not at the top (which signifies that the radiator needs bleeding).

Diagnosis:

This is usually caused by rust deposits inside the radiator that won’t allow for the proper circulation of water.

Solution:

The radiator will need flushing.  This means you should take it off the wall and clean it.

Call EPM to arrange a visit.

One radiator won’t warm up

Problem:

Just one radiator will not warm up

Diagnosis:

There are a few causes for this problem:

  • The valve on the radiator may be closed.
  • Thermostatic valve may not be set properly.
  • The radiator valve may be blocked by corrosion.

Solution:

If your radiators are blocked by corrosion then you will need to remove the radiator and flush it out.  In any of the above events it’s best to hire a professional to check.

Top of radiator is cool

Problem:

The top section of the radiator refuses to warm up.

Diagnosis:

This is almost certainly caused by an airlock that is preventing the water circulating fully.

Solution:

The radiator will need to be bled to release any trapped air.  It’s really best to have an expert doing this for you because excess radiator bleeding can lower the pressure in your heating system.
