Bad smell from cess pit or inspection cover

Problem:

A very bad smell from an inspection chamber or cess pit.

Diagnosis:

If you have a cess pit you may very well need it emptying.  If your sewage goes into the main system then you may just have a blockage in the pipes.  This can cause an enormous problem if it’s a severe blockage because it may overflow.

Solution:

You need to get the blockage cleaned out as soon as possible.  You can get some drain rods and do it yourself or you can call a professional to do the job for you.

Multiple blockages

Problem:

Several drains won’t drain away properly.  More than one sink and perhaps an appliance like a dishwasher or washing machine isn’t draining away properly either.

Diagnosis:

This is more than likely a blocked vertical stack/soil pipe.  It may not appear to be a huge problem at first, but eventually, and particularly if you were to empty a bath, you will almost certainly cause an overflow problem.

Solution:

The stack needs to be cleared and you will need to hire the services of a professional to do this job; specialist equipment is required.
